Katie grew up swimming in Texas, with her parents William and Karen and older sister Maureen. She moved north to attend Columbia University in New York, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a concentration in Art History. At Columbia, Katie earned All-American honors in five events and qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in four events. After graduating in 2013, she moved to North Carolina to train at SwimMAC and work part time in Human Resources at Direct ChassisLink, Inc., an intermodal shipping company. The company has since signed on as one of her sponsors so she can train and compete exclusively. At the 2014 US Winter National Championships, Katie won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, placed second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 breaststroke, but most consider 2015 to be her breakout year. She won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games in 100m breaststroke and as a part of the 4x100 medley relay. In December 2015, she claimed an American record in the 100m (short course) breaststroke and was part of the world-record breaking 400 medley relay.
